…and the winner is…

Brad’s tips to Golden Globe yourself.

I always love award season and it kicked off with great excitment with the Golden Globes last night! So much glamour and so many diverse and interesting hair looks. In a year with a plethora of stunning film and TV series (including my favs like ‘Iron Lady’, ‘War Horse’, ‘Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’, ‘Albert Nobbs’, ‘The Skin I Live In’, ’Downton Abbey’) there were so many red carpet hair looks that deserve accolades too! Here are my favourites and a quick ‘how-to’ should you wish to try to recreate the look yourself  ( – though, of course, we’d do a much better job for you in the salon!)…

And the winner is…

My overall winner just has to be Angelina Jolie..like WOW! The classic simple bun, the flawless makeup with a killer red lip that matched the slash of colour across her gown…every element of Angie’s look is simple, but with incredible impact. Her overall look scores my 10/10! HOW TO: To get the look like Angelina it’s about getting the right hair texture first. I would use L’Oreal Professionnel Volume Riche and apply the mousse evenly from roots to ends and blast dry. Take a large tong and roll the hair back. Once you have completed this, use your blowdryer to direct the hair back. Gather the hair back and tie off into a tight pony, then wind the ponytail clockwise to form a neat little bun and secure with pins. Finish with a sheen spray like L’Oreal Professionnel for some extra sparkle.

Charlize in a flap…

What effortless chic! I love  Charlize’s modern interpretation of the flapper look – set to be a huge trend in 2012 given movies coming out like ‘The Great Gatsby’ and ‘The Artist’. HOW TO: Prep the hair with L’Oreal Professionnel Volume Lift and dry into the hair with a low side part. Use a medium sized tong and curl the hair from roots to ends. Gently rake out the hair with your fingers to get a soft wave, then pin behind the ears into a soft roll (- it doesn’t need to be too neat!) We can’t all be lucky enough to have a diamond-encrusted headband, but adding any headband will ensure that you nail the neo-flapper look.

Diane in the hot Lane…

Diane Lane gave a nod to old Hollywood glamour. This hair look scores with me on two counts: I love the natural, age-appropriate glamour of the look, and, on the colour front, the hue of soft copper teamed with her face-framing balayage is hot on the money. Balayage is still our most requested colour service in my salons, though it is evolving to a softer tonal range as seen on Diane here. HOW TO: Use L’Oreal Professionnel Volume Riche and massage into the root area. Tip your head upside down and blast completely dry – this will give your hair hold and grip the curls. Brush hair and smooth out the top section with a paddle brush. Put in a side part and set hair with rollers (I particularly love the revolutionary Cloud 9 ‘O’), and set hair rolling the hair on the rollers towards the face. When the rollers are removed, spray with L’Oreal Professionnel Fix Design for lasting hold. Brush out gently and – vavoom! – old Hollywood glamour!

Rooney rules the red carpet…

I must admit I have a gay crush on this beauty! I recently saw ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ and fell in love with her so it’s only fitting that her Globe’s look is fierce and dark. I love the black slicked pony and the super strict part. I found Roony Mara’s look refreshingly cool, though immaculate, in contrast to many of the typical Hollywood starlet confections. HOW TO: To get such a strict part, use a tail comb. The arch of the eyebrow is where the part should start and use the tail end of the comb to draw a severe, perfect part. Use a gel like L’Oreal Professionnel Contorsion Gel which allows you to work the hair before the gel dries completely, and which has brilliant shine for a high gloss that mimics Mara’s. Finally, tie off tightly at the nape.

Hola…Salma does ombre…

The most wonderful thing about Salma Hayek’s hair was the very modern Ombre tone…sure to be a massive trend in 2012 and an evolution of the harsher varieties of balayage that have been so popular for the last two years. It’s great to see balayage adapting for those with darker hair. HOW TO: The key to getting this look correct is in the toning. In the wrong hands this colour could eaily go ‘borange’! (Definately NOT a home colour job!) I would recommend violet-based shampooo like L’Oreal Professionnel Silver Shampoo for those who have this colour done as it will maintain the colour of the highlighted areas and prevent it from going brassy. If the goal is to get the ombre effect in your hair, but you’re afraid to commit to the colour and maintenance, then have our Great Lengths specialist, Remington, add some Great Lengths extensions from their cool Ballayage ready-toned range. This will inject your desired lighter colour.

Love you, mean it, B x
